What We Do

Deaf Advocacy, Sports & Recreation in ACT

Established in 2010, Deaf Advocacy, Sports & Recreation ACT (DeafACT) is a not-for-profit organisation. Our mission is to:

  • Support Advocacy, Sports and Recreation groups for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in ACT and surrounding NSW areas.
  • Promote the recognition and acceptance of methods of communication preferred by Deaf people.
  • Foster pride in the Deaf community, its language and its culture.
  • Promote Deaf sport, recreational and social activities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

Although much of DeafACT’s work revolves around participation in Deaf sports. DeafACT is also working hard on advocacy and recreation programs for Deaf and HoH people. Examples of this include lobbying for open captioned cinema, hosting NDIS information sessions, and the provision of Auslan workshops for families who have deaf or HoH children and more. We also aim to foster a connected Deaf and HoH community through our Deaf Seniors ACT Group and promoting Canberra Deaf Club gatherings.

If you are interested in sponsoring or donating to our mission, please do not hestitate to contact us via email.
