DeafACT works with national bodies such as Deaf Sports Australia and Deafness Forum to ensure that lobbying events held at Parliament House are a success. We have for several years helped to put team together for the silent Touch Football, AFL and Netball challenges with Deaf teams playing politicians and their staff.
DeafACT promotes information sessions about the NDIS and has held drop in sessions to assist people who are having trouble with NABS (funding for Auslan interpreting for medical appointments).
We have built networks with local politicians, in particular our local Member of Legislative Assembly, Nicole Lawder MLA who has been a great support ensuring many of her videos are captioned and Auslan interpreted. Ms Lawder also moved a bill to allow Auslan interpreters to work from the floor of the legislative assembly.
DeafACT is currently lobbying local cinemas with regards to open captioning as one of our key advocacy projects.
